Organ donation rates face challenges in the UK and Malaysia

Health authorities in the United Kingdom and Malaysia are addressing challenges regarding deceased organ donation rates and the importance of family awareness.

In the UK, NHS Blood and Transplant has launched an urgent response plan following a 9% decline in deceased donation rates compared to the previous year. The UK transplant waiting list has reached a record high of over 8,700 people, with nine deaths occurring weekly. Data indicates that between April 2021 and March 2026, over 700 potential donations did not proceed because families were unaware of the deceased's wishes. Family consent rates have also dropped from 67% in 2020/21 to 57% last year.

In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health reported 102 deceased organ donors between January and August. Officials noted that while approximately 450,000 individuals are registered, actual donation numbers remain low because families hold the final decision-making power. During the National Organ Donation Awareness Week, health officials emphasized that awareness is crucial to ensuring a donor's humanitarian pledge is honored by their relatives.
