In the UK, NHS Blood and Transplant has launched an urgent response plan following a 9% decline in deceased donation rates. The transplant waiting list has reached a record high of over 8,700 people, with nine deaths occurring weekly. Data shows that between April 2021 and March 2026, over 700 potential donations failed to proceed because families were unaware of the deceased’s wishes. UK-wide family consent rates dropped from 67% in 2020/21 to 57% last year, a trend mirrored in Northern Ireland where rates fell from 79% to 64%.

During Organ Donation Week, UK health agencies are urging citizens to register on the NHS Organ Donor Register and communicate their decisions to relatives. Experts note that while laws have moved toward an opt-out system, family support for donation is 90% when the deceased’s decision is known, but drops to approximately 50% when the decision is unknown.

In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health reported 102 deceased organ donors between January and August. Despite approximately 450,000 registered individuals, actual donation numbers remain low because families hold final decision-making power. Officials emphasized that awareness is essential to ensure a donor’s humanitarian pledge is honored by their relatives.
