Saturn and meteor showers to headline October 2026 skywatching

October 2026 will feature several significant astronomical events, including the opposition of Saturn and two major meteor showers. On October 4, Saturn will reach opposition, making it appear at its brightest and closest to Earth, providing an ideal opportunity for observing its rings with telescopes or binoculars.

Two meteor showers are expected during the month. The Draconid meteor shower, originating from debris of Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, is predicted to peak around the night of October 8–9. Observation conditions for the Draconids are expected to be favorable due to the proximity of a New Moon on October 10, which minimizes moonlight interference. Additionally, the Orionid meteor shower, caused by particles from Halley's Comet, will be active from early October through early November.

Other notable celestial occurrences include a conjunction between the Moon and Mars on the morning of October 5, as well as close approaches between the Moon and other planets like Jupiter and Venus throughout the month.
