Oristano reports fourth West Nile fever case in 2026

The province of Oristano in Sardinia has confirmed a fourth case of West Nile fever for 2026. An 85‑year‑old man was admitted to San Martino Hospital with high fever and symptoms consistent with West Nile virus infection, a diagnosis confirmed by laboratory tests. The health department of ASL 5 launched an epidemiological investigation and began vector‑control actions, including disinfection of the patient’s residence.

The earlier three cases this year involved a man in his sixties identified in May, a nonagenarian who died after infection, and another senior citizen currently under observation. With no vaccine or specific therapy available, officials warned residents—especially the elderly—to prevent mosquito bites by eliminating standing water, using repellents, wearing long clothing and installing screens.
