Orix Buffaloes rookie Shikira Nogami dies suddenly at 19
The Orix Buffaloes have announced the sudden death of 19-year-old rookie catcher Shikira Nogami. Nogami was discovered unconscious in his room at the team dormitory in Maishima, Osaka, during a morning roll call on September 30. Emergency services confirmed his death at 8:00 AM.
Club General Manager Yuichi Kohama stated that there are no signs of foul play and that Nogami had appeared energetic during team practices the previous day, even participating in voluntary batting practice. Following the family's wishes, the specific cause of death has not been disclosed. Nogami, a former high school standout from Meishu Gakuen Hitachi, joined the team as a seventh-round draft pick and had appeared in 32 farm league games this season.
In response to the tragedy, the team canceled its scheduled farm league practice game against the Hanshin Tigers and transitioned the farm team to three days of independent practice to support the players.
In separate news, the Japanese baseball community is also mourning the passing of legendary hitter Isao Harimoto at the age of 86. Harimoto, known as a ‘hit machine,’ was the only player in NPB history to record 3,000 hits.
