Death of Orix Buffaloes rookie Shikira Nogami

Overview

On September 30, the Orix Buffaloes announced the sudden death of 19-year-old rookie catcher Shikira Nogami. Nogami was found unconscious in his team dormitory in Maishima, Osaka, during a morning roll call. Club General Manager Yuichi Kohama stated there were no signs of foul play and noted that Nogami had appeared energetic during practice the previous day. Following the incident, the team canceled a scheduled farm league game and transitioned to independent practice.

By October 3, the Orix Buffaloes farm team resumed collective practice at their Maishima facility. During the session, players and staff held a moment of silence to honor Nogami. To support the athletes, the club announced it would provide mental health care through external counselors ahead of the Miyazaki Phoenix League, which is scheduled to begin on October 7.
