Orville Peck reveals 2023 suicide attempt behind new album Mule

Country singer Orville Peck disclosed that he attempted suicide in June 2023 after deliberately overdosing, which led him to cancel his "Bronco" tour and enter rehab. He described the episode as a "turning point," saying, "I was a bad addict, a coping alcoholic," and that the experience forced many personal realizations.

Peck said the ordeal shaped the narrative of his forthcoming album Mule, which he calls a chronological account of his most difficult year, including a breakup, addiction, and rehab. The album, featuring collaborations with Emmylou Harris, Allison Russell and Noah Cyrus, is scheduled for release on 18 September. He also noted that the crisis coincided with a planned performance at Madison Square Garden and an upcoming appearance at the Grand Ole Opry.

The singer hopes his openness will raise awareness of mental‑health struggles while delivering what he considers his strongest musical work to date.
