Osaka City proposes budget for flood repairs and plant reconstruction

Osaka City has announced a supplementary budget proposal totaling approximately 3.27 billion yen across general and special accounts. A significant portion of the funds is allocated to repairing the Suminoe Pumping Station, which was submerged during heavy rains in June. The total cost for the emergency restoration of the station, including debt obligations for fiscal years 2027 and 2028, is expected to reach approximately 6.4 billion yen. The city aims to complete these repairs, which include pump inspections and part replacements, before the next flood season.

Additionally, the city is revising the reconstruction plan for the Shibajima Water Purification Plant. Due to rising material costs, the previous plan to centralize all functions at a new facility has become prohibitively expensive. The revised approach will focus on seismic retrofitting and utilizing existing facilities to manage costs.

Furthermore, the city will begin a soil contamination survey on approximately 31,320 square meters of municipal land in Konohana Ward. This site is slated for potential lease and is located within the planned expansion area for Universal Studios Japan (USJ).
