Osaka Metropolitan University researchers identify protein linked to fatty food cravings

Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University have identified a specific neural protein, optic atrophy-1 (OPA1), that may play a significant role in controlling cravings for fatty foods and weight gain. The study, published in the FASEB Journal, focused on the protein's role within appetite-related neurons that carry the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) in the hypothalamus.

OPA1 is responsible for the efficient functioning of mitochondria, the cell's energy producers. In experiments involving mice, those engineered to lack the OPA1 protein in MC4R neurons showed a significantly higher preference for dietary fat and gained weight more rapidly than control groups. These effects were noted to be more pronounced in females than males, eventually leading to obesity in the subjects.

Nutritionist Shigenobu Matsumura stated that the findings provide “key insights into the mechanisms underlying obesity from the perspective of neuronal energy metabolism.” The research suggests that understanding these biological pathways could eventually lead to methods for managing unhealthy food preferences.
