Overview

Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University have identified a neural protein, optic atrophy-1 (OPA1), which appears to play a significant role in controlling cravings for fatty foods and weight gain. The study, published in the FASEB Journal, indicates that OPA1 is responsible for the efficient functioning of mitochondria within appetite-related neurons in the hypothalamus.

In mouse experiments, the absence of OPA1 in neurons carrying the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) resulted in a higher preference for dietary fat and more rapid weight gain compared to control groups. These effects were observed to be more pronounced in females than males. Nutritionist Shigenobu Matsumura stated that the findings provide “key insights into the mechanisms underlying obesity from the perspective of neuronal energy metabolism.”

Following the identification of this biological pathway, supplemental guidance suggests that managing hunger through high-satiety foods—such as those high in fiber, protein, or water content—can assist in weight management and appetite regulation.
