Oscar Piastri Stays at McLaren as Verstappen Swap Rumours Swirl
Australian driver Oscar Piastri has confirmed he will remain with McLaren for the foreseeable future, with his contract officially running to the end of 2028. Team principal Zak Brown reiterated that the lineup of Lando Norris and Piastri is settled and that there are no active discussions about changes.
Despite the confirmation, the Formula 1 "silly season" continues to generate speculation about a possible driver swap with four‑time champion Max Verstappen. Verstappen, whose Red Bull contract also runs to 2028, holds an exit clause that could be triggered if he is not in the top two of the drivers’ standings by the summer break – a scenario that appears unlikely given his current seventh‑place position. Piastri himself carries a clause that could be activated should he fall outside the top five by the mid‑season break.
Media reports have suggested McLaren could become Verstappen’s destination, which would in turn open a seat for Piastri at Red Bull. Both teams have denied any formal negotiations, and the drivers have publicly stated they are unaware of any concrete talks. The rumours are fueled by recent on‑track incidents, contract language, and the movement of key personnel such as Red Bull race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who is set to join McLaren.
At present, no contractual changes have been announced, and the drivers remain committed to their respective teams on paper, leaving the speculation to dominate the paddock discourse.
