Armenia elections: OSCE reports unprecedented foreign interference
The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly has released its final report on the June 7, 2026, parliamentary elections in Armenia. The report describes the elections as diverse and well-organized, noting that voters were presented with genuine political alternatives and that the process occurred in a calm atmosphere in most observed polling stations.
However, the OSCE raised significant concerns regarding external interference. Observers noted that foreign information operations and external pressure reached ‘unprecedented scales’ for a Council of Europe member state. This included direct pressure through security threats and trade restrictions intended to influence voters in favor of opposition forces.
The report also criticized the Central Electoral Commission for invalidating results from certain polling stations without what it deemed sufficient justification. This decision had major political consequences, resulting in the exclusion of the ‘Prosperous Armenia’ party from parliament while granting additional mandates to the ruling ‘Civil Contract’ party. The OSCE has urged Armenian authorities to reform the Electoral Code to better regulate repeat voting and address issues of administrative resource abuse and voter disenfranchisement.
