Italy faces surge in impersonation scams and digital fraud

Italy is experiencing a surge in various criminal activities, ranging from sophisticated digital fraud to physical impersonation scams. Law enforcement agencies, including the Carabinieri and Polizia, have reported multiple incidents targeting vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly.

Impersonation scams involving fake military or police officers are prevalent. In several regions, criminals have posed as Carabinieri to convince victims to hand over jewelry and cash under the guise of official checks. Similar attempts were thwarted in Teramo and near Fabriano, while a successful theft in Olevano resulted in the loss of approximately 30,000 euros in jewelry.

Digital crimes are also on the rise. Phishing attacks via SMS, known as ‘smishing,’ have targeted UniCredit customers in Avellino and elderly individuals in Castel Maggiore. In one instance, Carabinieri successfully recovered nearly 50,000 euros for a victim after a fraudulent link was used to access their bank account. Additionally, a consultant at Banca Widiba has been sent to trial for allegedly embezzling 180,000 euros from a client.

Physical crimes continue to occur, including a high-speed chase in Turin following a jewelry store robbery and a robbery at a railway station in Gatteo. Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant, particularly against unsolicited phone calls or messages requesting sensitive banking information or the surrender of valuables.
