OSIPTEL to block 360,000 mobile devices in August

The Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL) has announced the progressive blocking of 360,000 mobile devices throughout August. This measure targets equipment not included in the white list of the National Registry of Mobile Terminal Equipment for Security (Renteseg) and is linked to individuals previously associated with altered IMEI numbers.

The initiative aims to combat the illegal trade of mobile devices. The blocking process is being carried out in stages: 120,000 devices were blocked on August 11, with subsequent blocks of the same amount scheduled for August 18 and August 25. Since April 2025, over 4.9 million devices have been affected by these measures.

Mobile operators are required to notify subscribers via SMS within two business days of receiving a blocking order. Users who receive a notification but believe their device is legitimate should contact their retailer for domestic purchases or their mobile service provider for devices acquired abroad to manage registration on the Renteseg white list.
