Osório confirms case of bovine rabies in livestock

A case of bovine rabies has been laboratory-confirmed in the Goiabeira locality of Osório, Brazil. Following the diagnosis in September, authorities have noted that animals in other rural communities, such as Livramento and Sertão, have also exhibited symptoms consistent with the disease.

Rabies is a severe viral infection that affects the nervous system of mammals and can be transmitted to humans. Local officials in Osório are advising residents and producers not to handle animals showing suspicious signs and to avoid contact with secretions, particularly saliva. Producers are urged to report any suspected cases to the Veterinary Inspectorate to facilitate investigation and control measures. The presence of hematophagous bats, which transmit the virus between animals, is a primary concern for livestock management.
