Osteoporosis diagnoses rising in individuals under 50

Medical experts are noting an increase in osteoporosis diagnoses among individuals under the age of 50. While traditionally viewed as a condition affecting post-menopausal women and the elderly, factors such as sedentary lifestyles, reduced sun exposure, and restrictive diets lacking sufficient protein and calcium are contributing to earlier onset.

Dr. Enrique Casado of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology notes that genetics account for 60-70% of bone mass variation, but lifestyle choices play a critical role. In men, excessive alcohol consumption is cited as a frequent cause. Specialists advise that any young person experiencing a fracture from minimal trauma should undergo medical evaluation.

To mitigate risks, healthcare professionals emphasize several modifiable factors: avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol, maintaining adequate nutrition with sufficient calcium and vitamin D, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring responsible sun exposure. An itinerant photographic exhibition titled ‘Sin Fisuras’ is currently being held at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona to raise awareness about these preventative measures and the challenges of the disease.
