Osteoporosis risk factors and bone density loss

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by the regression of bone density and structure, which can lead to unnoticed vertebral fractures and a reduction in height. Medical experts, including Uwe Maus of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma, note that as bones lose minerals like calcium, they become increasingly fragile.

According to the Federal Institute for Public Health, women are more than four times as likely to be affected by the disease than men, largely due to the drop in estrogen during menopause. While the disease typically manifests after age 50, bone mass loss can begin as early as age 30. Other risk factors identified in medical guidelines include smoking, corticosteroid use, and family history. To maintain bone strength, experts recommend a combination of endurance activities and strength training.
