Osteoporosis risk factors and prevention

Overview

Medical experts and health organizations have identified osteoporosis as a condition characterized by the loss of bone density and structure, which increases the risk of fractures in the spine, wrists, and hips. The disease is often described as a “silent disease” because it is frequently only discovered after a fracture has occurred.

Research indicates that women are significantly more vulnerable than men, often due to the decline of estrogen during menopause. In Brazil, for example, approximately 10 million people are affected, with women being diagnosed at three times the rate of men. While bone mass loss can begin as early as age 30, the disease typically manifests after age 50.

Risk factors include smoking, corticosteroid use, family history, and alcohol consumption. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend maintaining adequate calcium and vitamin D levels, practicing strength and endurance training, and monitoring weight. Bone densitometry is suggested for women starting at age 65, though earlier screening may be necessary for younger post-menopausal women or those undergoing oncological treatments.

Timeline

  1. [HEALTH] 3 sources
Osteoporosis poses significant fracture risk for women over 50

One in three women over 50 faces a lifetime risk of osteoporosis-related fractures. Experts emphasize early diagnosis and prevention through diet, exercise, and monitoring bone density.

Osteoporosis risk factors and bone density loss

Osteoporosis causes bone density loss and height reduction. Women face four times higher risk due to menopause, with bone mass loss potentially starting as early as age 30.
