Poland school attacks trigger nationwide security crackdown
Poland is facing a wave of school violence following three major attacks in less than a week. The most recent incident occurred on Saturday in Warsaw, where a 21-year-old woman used a dangerous object to injure three people, including a 17-year-old. The victims did not know the attacker, and none of the injuries were reported as life-threatening.
This follows two violent incidents in the Mazovian Voivodeship earlier in the week. On Wednesday, a 19-year-old student attacked nine people in Ostroleka, and on Thursday, a 15-year-old killed a school custodian and wounded two others in Leszczydole-Nowiny. These events have fueled widespread panic and rumors of an internet challenge known as ‘Bloody Friday,’ though authorities have stated there is no evidence such a challenge exists.
In response, Polish police have conducted massive security operations, inspecting nearly 50,000 schools and detaining 76 people, many of whom are teenagers suspected of making online threats or smuggling weapons. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for increased security, leading to the deployment of police patrols around educational institutions, which are expected to remain in place until further notice.
