Polish government responds to wave of school violence

Overview

Following a series of violent attacks at schools in Poland, authorities have implemented heightened security measures and increased police presence. The violence includes a stabbing in Ostrołęka, where a 19-year-old injured approximately nine to ten people, including students, teachers, and bystanders, while also possessing a homemade explosive device. In Sierpc, a 17-year-old was detained for allegedly planning an attack with two knives. A fatal stabbing occurred at the Jan Paweł II Primary School in Leszczydół-Nowiny, near Wyszków, where a 15-year-old former student killed a 37-year-old janitor, Daria K., and injured a teacher and the principal.

In response, the government launched a nationwide security operation. Recent updates indicate that police have now inspected nearly 50,000 schools and detained 76 individuals, primarily teenagers, for making online threats or attempting to smuggle weapons into educational facilities. In the Mazovian region, 46 schools have preemptively suspended classes to ensure student safety.

While rumors of an internet challenge known as ‘Bloody Friday’ caused widespread panic, officials have labeled such rumors as disinformation. However, police patrols, both on foot and in vehicles, will remain stationed around schools until further notice. In Warsaw, a 21-year-old woman was detained after attacking three people, including a 17-year-old, at an adult education center. Local authorities and school directors are currently meeting to review security protocols and emergency procedures as the nationwide security sweeps continue. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for increased security in light of these events.

In a recent incident in the Praga district of Warsaw, a 21-year-old student injured three female students with a ‘dangerous object’ at a higher education institution. An employee disarmed the attacker before police arrived; one 17-year-old victim was hospitalized with arm wounds, while two others were treated at the scene.
