Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski Jewish ghetto liquidation

Historical records detail the liquidation of the large Jewish ghetto in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, which began on October 10, 1942. At the time, the ghetto housed approximately 15,000 to 16,000 Jewish people following displacements from other areas such as Sandomierz.

The liquidation operation was carried out by German occupational authorities, including the SS, Security Police, and Order Police, supported by various auxiliary units. During the process, residents were segregated: those without work permits were sent to the town square, while those with work cards were directed to a different location. The elderly, sick, and children were designated for extermination.

Most victims were transported by rail to the Treblinka extermination camp, where over 11,000 people from the Ostrowiec ghetto were killed. Approximately 1,500 individuals were spared to serve as forced laborers in a smaller, residual ghetto. Hundreds of others were shot during the segregation and transport processes.
