Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski Jewish ghetto liquidation
Overview
Historical records and local commemorations document the liquidation of the Jewish ghetto in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski during the Holocaust.
In October 1942, German occupational authorities, including the SS and various police units, began the liquidation of a ghetto housing approximately 15,000 to 16,000 Jewish residents. During the operation, residents were segregated based on work permits. Those without permits, along with the elderly, sick, and children, were primarily targeted for extermination.
Over 11,000 individuals were transported by rail to the Treblinka extermination camp, while hundreds of others were shot during the process. Approximately 1,500 individuals were spared to serve as forced laborers in local industries or a smaller residual ghetto. Local officials and residents continue to gather to commemorate these events and the victims of the liquidation.
