Osun governorship election: Adeleke campaign council calls for international monitoring

The Imole Campaign Council, the political mobilisation team of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has submitted petitions to the British High Commission and written to the Inspector‑General of Police, demanding a free, fair and credible governorship election scheduled for 15 August 2026. Spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi alleged that the state police command is partisan, that security agencies have failed to act on violence, and that the Commissioner of Police is working for a political party. He urged the federal government, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and international observers – particularly the United Kingdom and other global civil‑society groups – to monitor the poll closely. The council repeatedly stressed that the election is “a major test of the integrity of INEC, the Inspector‑General of Police and our institutions” and will indicate Nigeria’s readiness for the 2027 general elections. The campaign also highlighted growing popular support for Adeleke, noting defections from the All Progressives Congress to the Accord Party, and called on voters to turn out peacefully.

The council’s appeals were echoed in several briefings in Abuja, where it emphasized that any compromise of the police or electoral process would undermine democratic credibility and urged the deployment of neutral security personnel ahead of the vote.
