Osun State police intensify security ahead of August 15 governorship election

Inspector‑General of Police Tunji Disu ordered a decisive crackdown on political killings in Osun State as the August 15 governorship election approaches. The directive, conveyed by Deputy Inspector‑General Adegoke Fayoade during a meeting with Governor Ademola Adeleke, instructed senior police officials to investigate incidents, arrest perpetrators and ensure prosecutions, while strengthening overall security to guarantee a peaceful, transparent vote.

Abuja‑based lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi also petitioned the IGP, urging immediate deployment of tactical forces after at least five residents, including a 14‑year‑old, were killed amid campaign violence. Olajengbesi demanded a thorough investigation of every violent act, impartial enforcement of the law and the redeployment of the Osun State Commissioner of Police. He emphasized that “appropriate directives to all police formations within Osun State to enforce the law impartially and without fear or favour throughout the electoral period” are essential for public safety and credible elections.
