Osun State sees killing of Accord supporter and APC campaigner in campaign violence

Two fatal incidents have heightened political tension in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election. On Tuesday evening, Accord Party supporter Ajayi Aderogba, known as Rogga, was shot dead in the town of Esa Oke, Obokun Local Government Area. The killing was blamed on unidentified gunmen and sparked protests, with the Imole Campaign Council spokesperson Pelumi Olajengbesi accusing APC House of Representatives member Oluwole Oke of sponsoring the attack. Oke denied any involvement, calling the allegation misleading and urging a police investigation.

The following day, an APC street‑campaign procession in Ede was struck by a truck, killing campaigner AbdulRasaq Ahmed and injuring seven others. Campaign officials said the driver ignored traffic directives from Federal Road Safety Corps officials. Both parties exchanged accusations, with the Imole Campaign Council lamenting the loss and the APC reiterating that it had no role in the Esa Oke shooting.

The incidents occur less than two months before voters decide whether incumbent Accord Governor Ademola Adeleke will retain office against APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and other challengers, raising concerns about security and political violence during the campaign.
