Osun State political violence escalates ahead of governorship election
Political violence has escalated in Osun State ahead of the upcoming governorship election. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that approximately 40 of its members have been killed in various attacks across the state.
Recent incidents include a fatal shooting in Esa-Oke that killed Ayegbo Oladale, the nephew of the APC Campaign Council Director-General, while another supporter, Taiwo Oluwadele, remains in critical condition. In Atakumasa East, four APC members—Adebayo Dada, Idowu Laide, Ebuke Emmanuel, and Adebiyi Ebenezer—were reportedly shot, with Dada sustaining severe injuries. Additionally, House of Representatives candidate Francis Eniade was reportedly attacked near the Okuku Divisional Police Station, leaving associates macheted or abducted.
The Accord Party, the ruling party, has responded to these tensions by petitioning the National Human Rights Commission for an inquiry into the killings in Esa-Oke. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Navy reportedly arrested APC House of Assembly candidate Babatunde Komolafe Festus and several supporters after a rifle was allegedly discovered during a routine search of their campaign vehicle. Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has condemned the reported killings and destruction of property.
