Peter Obi's convoy blocked by youths in Benue State

The convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi was obstructed by a group of youths on the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway in Benue State on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The incident occurred as Obi was traveling toward the Yelwata community to conduct a humanitarian visit to families affected by a 2025 massacre.

Obi alleged that the blockade was orchestrated by political thugs and an aide to Governor Hyacinth Alia to prevent his access to the region. The Benue State Government has strongly denied these claims, stating they had no prior knowledge of the visit and accusing Obi of failing to follow security protocols by not notifying relevant authorities. However, documentation shows that the NDC State Chairman, Mr Ohini Ojiegbe, had sent a formal notification to the Benue State Police Command on September 7.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the obstruction and has launched an investigation to determine the motive and identity of the youths involved. NDC Vice-Presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso condemned the incident as a threat to democracy and called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure state governors do not undermine political freedoms ahead of the 2027 elections.
