Otavalo launches free sterilization campaign for 700 animals

The Otavalo Mayor's Office has launched the ‘Deja Tu Huella’ campaign, a free sterilization initiative targeting more than 700 dogs and cats across urban and rural sectors. The program aims to support animal welfare by addressing the needs of pets in vulnerable situations, including those that are abandoned or living on the streets.

The first phase of the initiative included interventions in the Eugenio Espejo parish, specifically within the Huacsara and Gualapuro Ally Llacta communities. Following these field operations, the campaign moved to the Santé clinic in the Rumiñahui district, where 276 sterilizations were performed for specific cases and local rescuers.

In addition to surgical procedures, the campaign includes educational activities designed to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare among both children and adults. The program will continue progressively throughout different sectors of the canton.
