Oulu and Haparanda launch new passenger rail connection
A new passenger train connection between Finland and Sweden has commenced operations, linking Oulu to Haparanda via Kemi and Tornio. This marks the return of passenger rail service to central Tornio after it ended in 1988.
The service consists of two daily trips in each direction, totaling 28 weekly departures. The journey takes approximately one hour and 40 minutes. Due to differing food and alcohol regulations between the two countries, the restaurant car remains closed during the cross-border segment of the trip; services only open once the train reaches Oulu for further travel.
Passengers traveling with pets must comply with Swedish customs requirements, including microchipping, rabies vaccination, and a pet passport. While Nordic citizens can travel without a passport or ID card if identity can be verified, travelers are advised to carry proper documentation for customs inspections.
