Madonna del Carmine celebrations unfold across Italy on July 16

On July 16, dozens of Italian towns marked the feast of the Madonna del Carmine (also known as the Madonna del Carmelo), a devotion that traces its origins to a 1251 apparition to Saint Simone Stock, the prior general of the Carmelite order. The day is observed with early‑morning Masses, the traditional Supplica, and processions of the Marian statue through town streets, often accompanied by the blessing of agricultural tools or grain, reflecting the historic link between the devotion and rural life.

Major events this year included the San Giorgio del Sannio celebration with a solemn Mass presided by Bishop Michele Autuoro, the restored Piazza San Francesco in Salerno ready for the procession, and the re‑installation of the Madonna’s statue in Mugnano del Cardinale after a careful restoration. In Ruvo di Puglia, the Archconfraternity organized a month‑long novena and a final evening procession, while the cathedral in Roma displayed its historic Madonna del Carmine statue during a special liturgy. Ragusa marked the fifth anniversary of Bishop Giuseppe La Placa’s ordination with a Mass that also honored the Virgin. In Mesagne, the newly composed hymn to the Madonna was formally presented to the local patronage committee. Throughout the country, civic programs of food fairs, concerts, sports tournaments and charity events complemented the religious rites, underscoring the festa’s role as both a spiritual and communal celebration.
