Ovarian Cancer Deaths and Asthma Hospitalizations Rise in São Paulo, Brazil

Ovarian cancer remains a leading cause of death among women in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. Over the past decade the city recorded 215 fatalities, making it the fifth‑most lethal cancer locally. National projections by the Instituto Nacional de Câncer (INCA) estimate more than 8,000 new cases each year for 2026‑2028, with diagnosis often delayed because symptoms are vague and there is no effective screening test. Most victims are post‑menopausal women over 50, and a minority carry BRCA1/2 mutations.

In the neighboring Grande ABC region, asthma continues to burden the health system. Health authorities reported 537 asthma‑related incidents in the past 12 months, averaging 45 hospital admissions per month across seven municipalities.
