Over 70% of families in Campo Grande and São Paulo carry debt, study finds
A recent Household Debt and Delinquency Survey (PEIC) released by the National Confederation of Commerce (CNC) and Fecomercio shows that 72.3% of households in Campo Grande and 74.2% of households in São Paulo were indebted in May, the highest levels recorded in recent years.
Credit cards are the dominant source of debt, cited by roughly 79% of respondents in both cities. Among lower‑income families, store installment plans rank second in Campo Grande, while vehicle financing is the main secondary source for higher‑income households. In São Paulo, home‑loan financing follows credit‑card borrowing. The proportion of income allocated to debt slipped slightly to about 26% in São Paulo, yet overall indebtedness remains elevated, with delinquency rates around 21% in both locations.
