Overasselt community mourns security guard killed in shooting

Hundreds of people gathered in Overasselt to attend the funeral of Berry Leenders, a 51-year-old security guard who was fatally shot during a violent incident in late August.

Leenders was killed during the night of August 31 to September 1 when a group of heavily armed men opened fire at a residence on Ewijkseweg. Leenders, who was working as a security guard in a nearby vehicle, was caught in the crossfire of a conflict he was reportedly not involved in.

The funeral service included tributes from friends, family, and acquaintances. In a symbolic gesture, Leenders' dressage horse, Sir Lewis, accompanied the funeral procession to the crematorium. A crowdfunding campaign was established to cover funeral costs, as Leenders was uninsured and provided care for his mother.
