Overasselt shooting: One dead and 34 arrested after armed gang attack

A violent armed assault in the village of Overasselt, Netherlands, has resulted in the death of a 51-year-old security guard and injuries to two police officers. The incident occurred around 4:00 AM on September 1, when a large group of heavily armed, masked individuals approached a residence on Ewijkseweg.

Authorities have arrested 34 suspects in connection with the incident. The group is described by prosecutors as an international criminal organization including Dutch, Belgian, French, and Algerian nationals. Surveillance footage reportedly shows approximately 30 individuals, some carrying heavy weaponry, moving through the neighborhood.

Investigators suspect the attack is a revenge operation linked to a drug conflict involving fugitive cocaine trafficker Jos Leijdekkers, also known as ‘Bolle Jos’. Local media also reported a threatening video circulating in WhatsApp groups, in which masked men demanded the return of stolen cocaine.

Police chief Janny Knol characterized the violence as ‘unprecedented’. The two injured officers are reported to be in non-life-threatening condition. The operation involved large-scale searches across the Gelderland and Limburg regions, including arrests on major motorways and at Nijmegen station.
