Oxford launches first human trial of Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine
A 37‑year‑old volunteer, identified as Ed Hunt, received the inaugural dose of the experimental ChAdOx1 BDBV vaccine in Oxford on 68 days after the World Health Organization declared the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak a public‑health emergency. The Phase 1 study will enrol about 50 healthy adults aged 18‑55 to assess safety and immune response.
The vaccine uses the same adenovirus‑vector platform that underpins the Oxford‑AstraZeneca COVID‑19 shot. Development is funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), and the Serum Institute of India has manufactured a stockpile of roughly 620,000 doses for future deployment. The ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has infected nearly 3,000 people and caused more than 1,270 deaths, with cases also reported in neighboring Uganda.
If the initial safety data are positive, the programme plans to expand testing in Uganda and subsequently move to Phase II/III trials. The effort is part of a broader international response that includes parallel research on Bundibugyo‑specific antigens by other institutions.
