Oxford Economics releases 2026 Global Cities Index

Oxford Economics has released its 2026 Global Cities Index, a ranking of 1,000 cities based on five criteria: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance. New York, London, and Paris secured the top three positions.

In Romania, Bucharest and Iași were included in the list. Bucharest ranks 214th overall, performing strongest in economics (111th), while Iași holds the 486th position overall.

Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, ranks 443rd in the index. The city shows its strongest performance in economics, where it places 351st, but ranks lowest in human capital at 619th and governance at 518th.

The report notes that US cities tend to lead in economics and human capital, whereas European cities show higher rankings in quality of life, environment, and governance. Sokoto, Nigeria, occupies the final position at 1,000th.
