Overview
Oxford Economics released its 2026 Global Cities Index, which ranks 1,000 cities across five pillars: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance. New York, London, and Paris occupied the top three positions.
In Eastern Europe, Bucharest and Iaşi were included in the index, with Bucharest ranking 214th and Iaşi 486th. Chisinau, Moldova, ranked 443rd, performing best in economics but lowest in human capital and governance.
Bulgarian cities showed significant advancement in the rankings. Sofia rose 121 positions to 303rd, Varna jumped 171 places to 451st, and Plovdiv climbed 116 positions to 643rd. Analysts attributed these improvements to economic growth and rising incomes in Central and Eastern Europe.
