Oxford Street pedestrianisation begins in London

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has launched the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street, marking the first phase of a wider regeneration project. The changes, which took effect on Monday, October 26, involve closing the section of the street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street to most vehicle traffic.

Buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, cycles, scooters, and pedicabs are prohibited from entering the zone, with traffic being diverted to nearby roads. Deliveries are restricted to the hours between midnight and 7:00 am, while emergency services maintain access at all times.

The initiative aims to revitalise the shopping district, which generates approximately £3.1 billion in annual spend and attracts roughly 500,000 daily visitors. By the end of spring, the transformation is expected to include the installation of 50 new trees, over 100 seats, two public squares, and improved signage to create a world-class pedestrian destination.
