Oxford Street to begin phased pedestrianisation in London

London will begin the first phase of pedestrianising a section of Oxford Street starting Monday, October 26, 2026. The initial transformation will cover approximately one kilometre, running from Orchard Street to Great Portland Street.

During this phase, almost all forms of transport will be prohibited from the designated stretch, including cars, bicycles, taxis, buses, scooters, and pedicabs. Bus services will be diverted, with changes to routes expected to begin the weekend of October 24 and 25.

Mayor Sadiq Khan described the initiative as a “bold vision” to transform the high street into a pedestrian plaza designed for retail, leisure, and cultural events. While the project has received support from 66% of those in public consultations, Westminster City Council has expressed concerns regarding potential increases in noise, pollution, and displaced traffic on surrounding streets.

The project is being overseen by the Oxford Street Development Corporation as part of a phased regeneration strategy for the area.
