Oyo State and ICMPD launch €2.4m youth agricultural project

Youth Empowerment and Reintegration Project irregular migration agricultural development rural economic development climate-smart agriculture

The Oyo State Government and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) have launched the €2.4 million Youth Empowerment and Reintegration Project (YERP). Funded by the Government of Denmark, the initiative aims to empower approximately 700 youths, aged 18 to 35, through agricultural opportunities.

The project specifically targets young people in rural communities and returnee migrants within the South-West region. By promoting climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices, the program seeks to address youth unemployment, support the reintegration of returnees, and curb irregular migration by creating viable local livelihoods.

To support the initiative, the Oyo State Government has secured 1,766 hectares of farmland in Ilero, Kajola Local Government Area, and an additional 50 hectares at the Rural Community Development Centre in Aawe, Afijio Local Government Area.
