Oyo State youth agricultural reintegration project

Overview

The Oyo State Government and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) have launched the €2.4 million Youth Empowerment and Reintegration Project (YERP). Funded by the Government of Denmark, the initiative targets approximately 700 youths aged 18 to 35, specifically focusing on rural communities and returnee migrants in South-West Nigeria.

The project aims to address unemployment and curb irregular migration by transitioning agriculture from subsistence farming to a viable business model. To achieve this, the program incorporates mechanization, digital soil testing, and climate-smart agricultural practices. Participants will receive training, support for forming cooperatives, and market linkages.

To facilitate the project, the state has secured 1,766 hectares of farmland in Ilero, Kajola Local Government Area, and 50 hectares at the Rural Community Development Centre in Aawe, Afijio Local Government Area.
