Oyo State teachers return to classrooms after strike suspension
The Federal Government of Nigeria welcomed the suspension of the teachers’ strike in Oyo State, describing it as a victory for dialogue and a step toward uninterrupted learning. Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announced that teachers are returning to schools and praised Governor Seyi Makinde and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) leadership for their roles in resolving the dispute.
The NUT suspended the industrial action and directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to resume duties on Thursday, 2 July 2026. The strike had been triggered by security concerns after the kidnapping of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area. The state government pledged enhanced security measures, including a Joint Security Task Force, increased surveillance, emergency response improvements, and support for affected families.
Both the federal and state authorities reaffirmed their commitment to school safety, ongoing dialogue with teachers’ unions, and the broader goal of ensuring quality education under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
