Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere leader, dies at 100

Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the prominent leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the age of 100. His death was announced by Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who described the elder statesman as a respected figure committed to the development of Yorubaland and Nigeria.

Fasoranti passed away peacefully in his room in Akure. His son, Taiwo Fasoranti, the Secretary to the Ondo State Government, noted that the deceased had previously expressed a spiritual belief that he would depart the world upon reaching his 100th birthday.

A lifelong advocate for democracy, true federalism, and restructuring, Fasoranti’s career spanned Nigeria’s colonial era through the return to democratic rule. He was a distinguished educationist who established several schools and served as the Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.

President Bola Tinubu and other high-ranking officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, issued tributes mourning the loss of a principled leader and a key figure in the progressive political tradition of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
