Death and funeral plans for Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoroti

Overview

Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere, died on October 20, 2026, at the age of 100. Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announced the death, noting that Fasoranti passed away peacefully in Akure. He was recognized as a lifelong advocate for democracy, restructuring, and true federalism, having served as the Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983.

Afenifere has announced funeral arrangements to honor the late statesman. The schedule includes a Christian wake-keeping on December 16, 2026, followed by a funeral service and interment at St. David’s Cathedral in Akure on December 17, and a thanksgiving service on December 20.

Oba Olu Falae, Chairman of the National Executive Committee, is coordinating the burial committee alongside the Fasoranti family. In response to rumors of an internal leadership crisis, Afenifere leadership—including Deputy Leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan—dismissed such claims, stating that the current priority is a dignified farewell. They emphasized that succession will follow established organizational traditions and internal selection processes rather than personal campaigning or lobbying.
