Pacific Cyclone Activity Rises as Douglas‑Elida Approach and Typhoon Mekkhala Strengthens

Meteorologists are closely monitoring two low‑pressure systems in the Pacific that could interact through the Fujiwhara effect. The tropical disturbances labeled Douglas and Elida are within about 1,400 km of each other, prompting a 40‑50% chance of cyclonic development in the next week. If they merge, the combined system could produce a super‑storm with heavy rain, flooding and damaging surf for coastal areas near Mexico’s Jalisco and Colima states.

At the same time, super‑typhoon Mekkhala has rapidly intensified, reaching sustained wind speeds of level 16–17. The storm’s eye is currently east of the Philippines’ Luzon island and is projected to move north‑northwest toward Japan, with possible impacts on Okinawa and the Tosa Bay region. Authorities in Japan are preparing for extreme wave action and torrential rains, while the Philippines remains on alert.
