Pacific hurricanes trigger high surf advisories and coastal flood risks

High surf advisories, coastal flood warnings, and dangerous rip currents are expected over the Labor Day weekend due to tropical activity in the Pacific.

In Maui, southerly swells from Hurricane Lowell and east swells from Hurricane Karina are driving elevated surf conditions. South-facing shores may see waves between 8 and 12 feet, while east-facing shores could reach 7 to 12 feet. Forecasters warn that as Hurricane Lowell's swell veers southwest, there is increasing confidence in the potential for extra-large surf exceeding warning levels along south and western exposures early next week.

These swells, coinciding with monthly high tides, pose a risk to harbor entrances, channels, coastal properties, and infrastructure such as roadways. Elsewhere, weather patterns are shifting toward higher humidity and increased rain chances, with Beach Hazard Statements and High Surf Advisories set to take effect Saturday afternoon.
