Pacific Island nations advance climate reporting and community advocacy

Pacific Island nations are intensifying regional efforts to address climate change through improved reporting and community-led advocacy. In Vanuatu, representatives from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Cook Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia are participating in a workshop to strengthen climate reporting under the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework.

The workshop focuses on helping nations prepare Biennial Transparency Reports and develop greenhouse gas inventories. While Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu have already submitted initial reports, many Pacific nations face technical hurdles, including limited internet access and data collection difficulties due to remote locations and small populations.

Simultaneously, the COP31 process has launched in Nadi, Fiji, through the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform’s Pacific Gathering. Unlike traditional state-led negotiations, this event prioritizes the voices of Indigenous Peoples, youth, farmers, and community leaders. The gathering aims to ensure that the lived experiences and resilience of Oceania’s communities are central to global climate discussions.
