Pacific leaders meet in Fiji to coordinate COP31 climate strategy

Pacific island leaders and international delegates are meeting in Nadi, Fiji, from October 5-8 to coordinate strategies ahead of the COP31 climate summit, which is scheduled for November in Turkey. The discussions focus on maintaining the global warming limit at 1.5°C, a threshold that a recent United Nations Environment Programme report suggests the world may cross within five years.

Regional leaders are emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced climate finance. Reports indicate a significant gap, with developing nations requiring between US$310 billion and US$365 billion for adaptation, while only US$26 billion was available in 2023. The talks also aim to address the disproportionate impact of sea-level rise on Pacific nations, which is occurring at twice the global average.

A key component of the meetings includes a retreat on the low-lying island of Tuvalu. Delegates will observe land reclamation efforts in Funafuti, where the highest point is only two meters above sea level. Tuvalu's leadership has highlighted that rising seas are a present reality, with the nation exploring plans to relocate its population if current trends continue.
