Pacific Link pipeline designated as project of national interest

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have designated the Pacific Link pipeline, formerly known as the West Coast Oil Pipeline, as a project of national interest. The approximately 1,250-kilometre project aims to connect Bruderheim, Alberta, to a deepwater port near Delta, British Columbia.

Designed to reduce Canada's energy dependency on the United States, the pipeline is expected to enable the export of an additional one million barrels of oil per day to Asian markets. The project is estimated to cost between $35.2 billion and $43.7 billion and is projected for completion by 2032.

The federal government and Alberta will share equal ownership of the pipeline. Additionally, Indigenous communities will be offered a minimum 10 per cent ownership interest, supported by Indigenous Loan Guarantee Programs from both levels of government. The development group includes Trans Mountain Corp., the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, and Pembina Pipeline Corp.
