Pacific nations prepare for El Niño weather impacts

Pacific nations Samoa and Fiji are increasing preparations as El Niño conditions are expected to impact the region. In Samoa, the Ministry of Health has issued a public health advisory following the meteorological declaration of El Niño conditions. The ministry warned that the phenomenon could lead to hotter, drier weather, potentially causing droughts, water shortages, reduced agricultural production, and electricity shortages due to lower hydropower generation. Key health concerns identified include an increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, water- and food-borne illnesses, and heat-related illnesses.

In Fiji, the government is coordinating through the National Disaster Management Office to strengthen national preparedness. Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya emphasized the need for communities to prepare for severe weather and prolonged dry periods. Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau noted concerns regarding water levels and power supplies, urging the public to conserve both water and electricity. Forecasts suggest that El Niño conditions could intensify in the coming months and persist into early 2027.
